Importing and Exporting Data

Can Merlin import data from Microsoft Outlook?

Yes. Merlin can import contacts, categories, email items, attachments, files, appointments and tasks from Microsoft Outlook.

The Merlin import previewer allows you to decide what types of data and which items to import. For Outlook contacts, Merlin first imports all the companies it finds, and then it imports all the individuals. You can watch this happening in the Data Preview 'Import Status' column. Relationships between people and companies are then constructed automatically. Contacts that represent two people ("John and Mary Smith", for example) are also split and related.

Therefore the number of contacts Merlin creates will usually be larger than the number in Outlook. If you assigned categories to contacts in Outlook, Merlin will automatically create and relate them as it imports your contacts. If a contact from Outlook already exists in Merlin, or if Outlook contains duplicate contacts, Merlin will optionally merge them. For emails, files, tasks and appointments, Merlin allows you to import everything, or limit the import by date range and size.

Can Merlin import data from Thunderbird?

Yes. Merlin can import contacts, categories, email items, attachments, files, appointments and tasks from Thunderbird.

Can Merlin import bookmarks from my browser?

Yes. Merlin can import bookmarks and browsing history from Safari, Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer.

Can I export data from Merlin?

Yes. You can export directly to Outlook, Thunderbird and various portable formats, limited by the types of data the destination program is able to understand.

Once data has been exported from Merlin, is it still secure?

The data in Merlin is still secure, but the exported copies are not. That's because in order for external applications such as Outlook, Word or Open Office to open the exported data, Merlin must export 'plain text' (decrypted) versions of it, those programs do not understand encryption.

Can I 'zip up' a group of files and send them to someone?

Yes. You can create 'Merlin Packages' which are just like zip files, only better, because they are encrypted. Each package has its own encryption and password. You can then export those packages to your hard drive, to a flash drive or simply share them via Kahuna with other Merlin users.

You can also create 'self-extracting' packages and give them to people who are not Merlin users. If you share packages with non-Merlin users, we strongly suggest you supply the password to them by a separate channel than the means by which you sent it – for example, if you email a package as a file attachment to someone who doesn't have Merlin, you should supply the password to them by phone or text message, or in person.
